Restaurant
La Pergola
Heinz Beck's rooftop restaurant at the Rome Cavalieri was the first in the city to earn three Michelin stars and remains its only three-star table.
At the foot of Monte Testaccio, Flavio al Velavevodetto is a busy trattoria serving quinto quarto offal dishes, fresh pasta and classic Roman sauces.
Good to know
Flavio al Velavevodetto sits on Via di Monte Testaccio, at the base of the ancient artificial hill built from broken Roman amphorae, in a street lined with restaurants and bars. It is the original of a small group that now includes a branch in Prati and two in Milan. The kitchen sticks to the Roman tradition, with fresh pasta, rich meat and tomato sauces, seasonal greens and the quinto quarto offal dishes for which Testaccio, once home to the city's slaughterhouse, is known.
It is a good choice for a relaxed, unhurried dinner, especially in warmer months. Book through the website, particularly at weekends. Piramide metro station is around ten minutes' walk away.
