Restaurant
La Pergola
Heinz Beck's rooftop restaurant at the Rome Cavalieri was the first in the city to earn three Michelin stars and remains its only three-star table.
A neighbourhood trattoria at the end of the tram 8 line in Monteverde, Da Cesare al Casaletto serves Roman classics and a strong list of Lazio wines.
Good to know
Da Cesare al Casaletto is well outside the tourist circuit, in residential Monteverde, and that is part of its appeal. The kitchen builds traditional Roman antipasti, primi and secondi on carefully chosen ingredients such as guanciale, pecorino romano, Sabina olive oil and good flour, and the menu is backed by a wide choice of local wines. Fried starters, the classic Roman pastas and slow-cooked meat dishes are the core of the menu.
The team now also runs a second trattoria on Via del Pellegrino in the centre and a separate Laboratorio. To reach the original, take tram 8 from Largo di Torre Argentina or Trastevere to its Casaletto terminus, a scenic ride across the river. Book online in advance, especially at weekends.
