Attraction
Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary
A village-owned forest of about ten hectares at the southern end of central Ubud, home to more than a thousand long-tailed macaques and three 14th-century temples.
Indonesia spreads across thousands of islands, with estimates ranging from about 13,000 to more than 17,500, and it offers enormous variety for travellers. Bali is the main hub for international tourism, combining beaches in the south with the cultural centre of Ubud, the volcanoes of Kintamani and the temples of the island's Hindu majority. On Java, Yogyakarta is home to a hereditary sultanate and is the gateway to Borobudur, the Buddhist monument built between the 8th and 10th centuries, while the capital, Jakarta, is the largest city. Sumatra has Lake Toba, the country's largest lake. The climate is tropical throughout, with a wetter season from about November to April.
