Restaurant
Locavore NXT
The successor to Bali's famous Locavore, a tasting-menu restaurant in Lodtunduh with a rooftop food forest and fermentation lab, ranked on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants.
The rooftop restaurant and bar of Bisma Eight on Jalan Bisma, cooking modern European food with Southeast Asian touches using produce from its own Tegallalang garden.
Good to know
Copper Kitchen, Bar and Rooftop is the restaurant of the Bisma Eight hotel at Jalan Bisma No. 68, about a five-minute walk down Jalan Bisma. It is open to non-residents for lunch and dinner, and its open-air rooftop, with views over the jungle canopy of the valley below, is one of its main attractions.
The kitchen describes its cooking as modern European with Southeast Asian touches, drawing on Italian, British and French traditions and mixing them with Indonesian flavours and grilled seafood. Much of the produce comes from Bali, including from the restaurant's own garden in Tegallalang, and sustainability is part of the approach. The menu changes, but recent dishes have included charred octopus, sous vide chicken breast, grilled Tasmanian salmon, pan-fried black pepper shrimp, duck leg betutu, barramundi cooked as ikan bakar, rendang, truffle mushroom risotto and sticky pork ribs, with a dragon fruit tartlet among the desserts. Sharing plates make it easy for a group to try several dishes.
The rooftop bar serves classic and signature cocktails and wines, and it is a popular spot for a sunset drink before dinner. The restaurant also hosts themed evenings such as Nusantara On Stage, a five-course dinner built around Indonesian cuisine, as well as festive dinners at Christmas and New Year, and it runs workshops. It can arrange romantic dinners, group dining and private events, and its website sets out its approach to sustainability alongside the workshop programme. Diners often recommend the lobster fried rice.
The setting is relaxed rather than formal, which makes Copper a good choice for a special meal that does not require a full tasting menu. Bookings can be made by phone or through WhatsApp, and the restaurant can be contacted by email for events and group bookings.
Copper suits couples, groups of friends and families wanting a comfortable meal with a view. Allow around two hours for dinner, and arrive before sunset if you want to see the view in daylight. Jalan Bisma is also home to the Honeymoon Bakery and the Casa Luna Cooking School, so it is easy to make a day of the street.
