Bacari

Bacari is an intimate wine and cocktail bar on Jalan Goutama, one of the small streets in central Ubud known for its cluster of cafés, bars and restaurants. By day the same address is Tucky, a small café serving specialty coffee and Asian-inspired brunch; in the evening it becomes Bacari, with low light and an industrial-style interior that seats only about 22 people.

The wine list is the main draw. Bacari uses a Coravin system, which allows bottles to be poured by the glass without being opened in the usual way, so it can offer 20 wines by the glass, including wines such as Gavi di Gavi and Barolo. That makes it a good place to try something better than the house wine without committing to a whole bottle.

The cocktail list includes a Negroni and the Revolver, a mix of cold brew coffee and bourbon, among the regulars, and a cold brew coffee martini also on the list. Food comes in the form of tapas-style small plates, such as zucchini and ricotta or lamb, and a dinner menu that draws on Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and South Asian influences, so you can make a light meal of it.

Bacari opens in the late afternoon or early evening and closes around 11pm, according to recent guides. Because the room is small, it fills up quickly at busy times, and it is a better choice for couples and small groups than for large parties. The setting is chic, with gold cutlery and handcrafted ceramics, and one guide calls it Ubud's first wine and tapas bar. The intimate setting makes it a good choice for a date night or a quiet solo visit, and a good alternative to the live-music bars on Jalan Monkey Forest.

Jalan Goutama is an easy street to explore on foot, with Night Rooster's cocktail bar on Jalan Goutama Selatan and several cafés and warungs nearby, so Bacari fits naturally into an evening of food and drink in the centre. Most central hotels and guesthouses are within walking distance. Allow an hour or two for a couple of glasses and some tapas.
