Good to know
Hujan Locale is a modern Indonesian restaurant in a heritage townhouse on Jalan Sri Wedari, a side street in central Ubud. It is part of the group of restaurants led by the chef Will Meyrick, whose travels around the Indonesian archipelago shape the menu. Recent recognition includes a silver award for best Indonesian restaurant in Bali from Honeycombers in 2026 and a place in Travel + Leisure's Tastemakers awards.
The menu is built around regional recipes from across Indonesia and local ingredients, and the dishes are designed for sharing, so it works best when a group orders several plates for the table. Recent menus have included tahu gejrot, beef sate Padang, slipper lobster dumplings, hand-chopped duck lawar, sate babi merah, nasi bakar babi, bebek goreng, tongseng kambing and a house-smoked black pepper short rib. Menus change, so the dishes on offer may differ from these, but the range gives a good sense of how widely the kitchen draws on the archipelago.
The restaurant is open every day, with all-day dining from noon to 10pm and the bar serving cocktails and drinks from noon until late. At lunchtime there is also a walk-in option called Warteg, a build-your-own plate that suits a quicker meal. On Tuesday and Friday evenings there is live keroncong music, which adds to the atmosphere of the old townhouse.
Seating is limited and the restaurant recommends booking ahead, which can be done online or by WhatsApp. Groups of more than ten are handled through its group dining service, and parties of more than 20 can take over the dining room. There is no parking or valet service, so the restaurant suggests arriving by motorbike taxi, using the Central Parking Ubud car park or being dropped at the top of Jalan Sri Wedari and walking down. It does not provide high chairs, which is worth knowing for families with toddlers.
Hujan Locale suits couples, groups of friends and anyone wanting a lively, sociable dinner with good cocktails. Allow around two hours for dinner. Its central position makes it easy to combine with an evening walk around town or a drink at one of the bars nearby.
