Nepal Travel Guide: Things to Do, Attractions & Where to Eat

Nepal is a Himalayan country between India and China, home to Everest and many of the world's highest mountains, and to a rich mix of Hindu and Buddhist cultures. Most visitors arrive in Kathmandu, whose valley holds a cluster of World Heritage monuments, from the Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur to the stupas of Boudhanath and Swayambhunath. Beyond the capital, Pokhara is the lakeside base for the Annapurna region, Chitwan National Park offers jungle wildlife including rhinos, and Lumbini is revered as the birthplace of the Buddha. Trekking is the great draw, whether on the trails to Everest Base Camp or around Annapurna, but Nepal also rewards travellers with festivals, mountain villages, rafting and some of the friendliest hospitality in Asia.

Nepal travel FAQs

What is the best way to travel around Nepal?

Domestic flights save time on longer routes, such as Kathmandu to Pokhara or to Lukla for the Everest region, while tourist buses and private cars cover the main roads. Allow extra time, as mountain roads are slow and flights depend on the weather.

When is the best time to visit Nepal?

Autumn, roughly October and November, brings clear skies and is the peak trekking season, and spring, from March to May, is also popular. The monsoon, from about June to September, brings heavy rain and cloud.

Which places should you visit in Nepal besides Kathmandu?

Pokhara and the Annapurna region for lakes and trekking, Chitwan National Park for wildlife, Lumbini for the birthplace of the Buddha, and the Everest region for the high Himalaya.
