A tiny tiled bar near the port that has served the same short menu since 1945: fried small fish, anchovies, butifarra sausage and salad.
Bar La Plata has opened its doors onto Carrer de la Mercè since 1945, and its approach has barely changed. The menu is famously short: pescadito (small fried fish), anchovies, grilled butifarra sausage and a simple tomato salad, and little else.
It is a standing, elbow-to-elbow sort of place, cheap and cheerful, and part of a lane of old-school bars in the lower Gothic Quarter that are good for hopping between. Come at aperitivo time or early in the evening. It closes on Sundays and for a break in the afternoon.
