Thing to do
Bunkers del Carmel (Turó de la Rovira)
A Civil War anti-aircraft battery on the Turó de la Rovira hilltop, now a free history site with one of the widest panoramas over Barcelona.
Barcelona's best-known food market, entered from La Rambla under a wrought-iron arch, packed with produce stalls, fishmongers and busy counter bars.
Good to know
La Boqueria has traded on this site since the 19th century and still serves local cooks as well as visitors. Beyond the juice and fruit-cup stands by the entrance, the deeper aisles hold the real business: fish and shellfish on ice, Iberian ham, offal, wild mushrooms in season and stalls of dried fruit and spices.
The counter bars inside are the best reason to linger, cooking market produce to order for diners on stools. Come in the morning on a weekday for the liveliest trading and fewer tour groups, and avoid Sundays, when the market is closed. Bring cash for the smaller stalls, and watch your bags in the crowds.
