Good to know
Els Quatre Gats opened in 1897 on the ground floor of Casa Martí and quickly became a meeting point for Barcelona's Modernista artists and writers. A teenage Pablo Picasso joined their gatherings, held his first solo exhibition here in 1899 and designed the menu cover.
Today it is a café-restaurant whose period interior still evokes those years. Come for a coffee to soak up the atmosphere, or stay for Catalan cooking at lunch. It is just off Avinguda del Portal de l'Àngel, a few minutes' walk from Plaça de Catalunya and the cathedral.
