Bu Qtair started life as a simple shack serving fishermen near Umm Suqeim and has grown into a busy restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, while keeping its casual spirit. It gained international attention after featuring on Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown in 2013, and Burj Al Arab is visible from nearby.
There is no elaborate menu: you choose from the day's fish and prawns, which are coated in a fiery spice paste with chilli and curry leaves and then fried, and eat them with rice or roti. It is inexpensive and very popular, so queues build at peak times, especially in the evening. Go early, be patient, and do not expect fine-dining service.
