Good to know
Pulau Ubin is a small island off Singapore's north-east coast where the pace slows right down: there are village houses, quarry lakes, mangroves and quiet trails better suited to bicycles than cars. At its south-eastern tip lies Chek Jawa, a wetland of around 100 hectares with a boardwalk through the mangroves and, at low tide, tidal flats rich in marine life.
Bumboats run on demand from Changi Point Ferry Terminal between about 6am and 7pm, usually leaving once 12 passengers are aboard, and the crossing takes about ten minutes. Bring cash for the fare, sun protection and plenty of water, and note that boats outside those hours must be arranged privately at a higher fare. An early start gives you the coolest hours on the trails.
