Singapore's oldest museum, with roots going back to 1849, telling the nation's story inside a domed 19th-century building on Stamford Road.
The National Museum of Singapore traces its history to 1849 and has occupied its neoclassical home on Stamford Road since 1887, making it the oldest museum in the country. Its permanent galleries chart Singapore's story from early settlement through colonial rule, wartime occupation and independence, using objects, film and personal accounts.
Look up inside the rotunda, where the dome is finished with stained glass and zinc tiles. Parts of the building are being restored and upgraded, but the museum remains open, so check which galleries are available before you plan a long visit. Fort Canning Park rises directly behind it, and Bras Basah and Dhoby Ghaut MRT stations are each a few minutes' walk.
