Thing to do
Trastevere
Rome's 13th rione, across the Tiber from the centre, is a web of cobbled lanes, ancient churches and trattorias that comes alive in the evening.
Testaccio's covered neighbourhood market gathers around 100 stalls of produce, fish, street food and household goods above the remains of a Roman warehouse.
Good to know
Testaccio has long been one of Rome's most food-focused districts, and its covered market is where residents still do their shopping. Around 100 stalls sell fruit and vegetables, fish, meat, cheese, shoes and kitchenware, alongside a growing number of street food counters serving sandwiches, pizza by the slice and Roman snacks to eat on the spot. Excavations beneath the building revealed part of an ancient horreum, a Roman storage warehouse, which can be seen on site.
Go in the morning, when the produce stalls are at their busiest, and bring cash for smaller traders. Entrances are on Via Beniamino Franklin, Via Alessandro Volta, Via Aldo Manuzio and Via Lorenzo Ghiberti. Combine a visit with the nearby Monte Testaccio and the Protestant Cemetery.
