Why we recommend it

Unlike most Roman squares, Campo de' Fiori has no church; instead it has a market, which has traded here daily since 1869. Stalls of fruit, vegetables, flowers, spices and pasta fill the piazza, and the surrounding streets are named after the old trades, from hatmakers to locksmiths. At the centre stands Ettore Ferrari's 1889 statue of Giordano Bruno, placed where the philosopher was burned for heresy in 1600 and turned to face the Vatican.

The market is aimed increasingly at visitors, but it is still an enjoyable morning stop, especially combined with the bakeries and delis on nearby Via dei Giubbonari. In the evening the square changes character as bars fill up. Piazza Navona and the Ghetto are each a few minutes' walk away.
