Why we recommend it

Katz's has been serving the Lower East Side since 1888, and its cavernous dining room on the corner of Houston and Ludlow Streets still runs on an old-fashioned ticket system. You are handed a numbered ticket at the door, order at the counter, and pay on the way out, so do not lose it.

The pastrami sandwich, cured in-house and carved by hand, is the reason to come; corned beef, matzo ball soup and potato latkes are solid companions. Film fans will find the table marked where the famous When Harry Met Sally scene was shot. Queues build at lunchtime and weekends, so arrive early or late.
