Café
Caffè Reggio
A Greenwich Village café open since 1927 that claims to have introduced cappuccino to America, with an ornate 1902 espresso machine on display.
A Viennese-style café inside the Neue Galerie on Museum Mile, serving Austrian pastries, coffee and dishes amid period furnishings.
Good to know
Café Sabarsky occupies part of the ground floor of the Neue Galerie, the museum of early twentieth-century German and Austrian art housed in a Beaux-Arts mansion on Fifth Avenue at 86th Street. The room recreates a turn-of-the-century Viennese coffee house, with period furnishings and a Bösendorfer grand piano used for cabaret and classical performances.
It is a natural stop between visits to the Met and the Guggenheim, both nearby. Come for a Viennese coffee with Sachertorte or apple strudel, or a more substantial Austrian lunch. Lunch is first-come, first-served, so arrive early to avoid a queue, while dinner can be reserved. The café is closed on Tuesdays.
