Bar
Bemelmans Bar
The Carlyle hotel's elegant piano bar, painted with whimsical murals by Madeline illustrator Ludwig Bemelmans, with nightly piano and late jazz.
A tiny, wedge-shaped basement jazz club on Seventh Avenue South that has hosted the music's greats at the same address since 1935.
Good to know
The Village Vanguard has occupied its basement on Seventh Avenue South since 1935, and the narrow, triangular room with its red walls and photographs of past performers is one of the most revered venues in jazz. Many landmark live albums have been recorded here, and the club still books leading contemporary musicians alongside established names.
The room is small and the focus is entirely on the music, so expect close seating and quiet during sets. Tickets for each run of shows are sold online in advance, and popular weeks sell out, so book early. Arrive in good time before your set to get a better seat.
