Why we recommend it

Hotel Mundial stands on Praça Martim Moniz, the square at the bottom of the castle hill where the Baixa meets the Mouraria district. It is a large, conventional city hotel rather than a boutique property, and its appeal lies in its position and its views: the Baixa is a few minutes' walk away, São Jorge Castle rises above it and tram 28 begins its route through the old town from the square outside.

The hotel offers rooms and suites, along with several places to eat and drink. The Rooftop Bar Mundial, on the terrace at the top of the building, faces the castle and the old town and is a popular place to watch the sunset. Varanda de Lisboa serves Portuguese cuisine with a view over the city, and there is also the Maximinus Bar and Lounge and the 28 Restaurant and Terrace, named after the tram that departs below. Eight meeting rooms make it popular with business travellers and groups.

Practical services include free Wi-Fi, room service and on-site parking, which is valuable in a part of the city where parking is difficult. Flexible cancellation is offered on bookings made directly with the hotel. Note that the hotel has been carrying out renovation works running until October 2026, so ask about the current state of rooms and public areas when booking.

The Mundial suits travellers who want a central base at a more moderate price than the boutique hotels of the Chiado, families who need straightforward facilities and anyone arriving by car. The square itself is busy and diverse, with the Mouraria's multicultural shops and restaurants nearby, and the area is lively until late. As in any busy central square, keep an eye on your belongings in the evening.

Transport links are among the best in the city. Martim Moniz metro station, on the green line, is about 50 metres away, and Rossio station on the same line is a short walk. Tram 28 and several bus routes terminate at the square, and the Rossio railway station, for trains to Sintra, is about 500 metres away. From the airport, a taxi takes around 15 minutes outside rush hour, or you can take the red metro line and change to the green line at Alameda. Rossio, Praça da Figueira and the Baixa's pedestrian streets are all within a ten-minute walk.
