Hotel
Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon
A five-star modernist landmark opened in 1959 above Eduardo VII Park, with a celebrated collection of mid-century Portuguese art and the Michelin-starred CURA.
A five-star hotel in a nineteenth-century palace in the embassy district of Lapa, with subtropical gardens and views over the Tagus.
Good to know
The Olissippo Lapa Palace occupies a nineteenth-century mansion built as a private residence on the hillside of Lapa, the quiet, leafy district west of the centre where many embassies are based. The house looks down over the Tagus, and its terraced subtropical gardens, with mature trees, lawns and water features, give it a sense of space that is rare in central Lisbon. It is a five-star hotel and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.
There are 95 rooms divided between two wings. The Palace Wing, in the original building, has rooms and suites with high ceilings and classic decoration, while the Garden Wing faces the grounds. Decorative styles vary from room to room, drawing on Art Deco, colonial, Algarve and neoclassical influences, so it is worth looking at the categories carefully when booking. Many rooms have views of the gardens or the river.
Dining is divided between the Restaurante Lapa inside the palace and Le Pavillon in the gardens, which hosts barbecues in the warmer months. The hotel has pools and a spa, and the gardens provide space to relax away from the hills and crowds of the old town. The hotel also has spaces for meetings and events.
Lapa Palace suits couples, families who want outdoor space and travellers looking for a calm retreat rather than a base in the thick of things. The residential setting is peaceful, but it does mean the historic centre is not on the doorstep: the Baixa is a taxi or tram ride away, and walking back up the hill from the river is steep. The hotel is a good choice if you plan to divide your time between central sightseeing and Belém, which is easy to reach along the riverside.
The nearest public transport is tram 25, which runs through Lapa towards the Estrela basilica and the Baixa, and tram 28 stops at Estrela, a short walk up the hill. The Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga is nearby on Rua das Janelas Verdes, though it has been closed for renovation and is due to reopen partially on 21 November 2026. The cafés and shops of Campo de Ourique and the Jardim da Estrela are within a pleasant walk.
