Why we recommend it

The High Line runs above the streets of the West Side, from the Meatpacking District through Chelsea to Hudson Yards, on the tracks of an old freight railway. Planted with wild-looking grasses and perennials, it has become one of New York's most popular walks, with public art commissions and glimpses down the avenues along the way.

Entry is free and there are stairs, ramps and lifts at several points. It opens at 7am, closing at 10pm from April to November and 8pm in winter. Weekday mornings are quietest. Check the official site for any section closures, and combine the walk with Chelsea Market or the Whitney Museum at the southern end.
