Attraction
British Museum
Britain's great museum of world history and culture in Bloomsbury, with free entry to a permanent collection spanning two million years of human civilisation.
Nearly a thousand years of royal history on the Thames, home to the Crown Jewels, the White Tower and the famous Yeoman Warders.
Good to know
Founded by William the Conqueror, the Tower of London has served as a royal palace, fortress, prison and treasury. Today it is best known for the Crown Jewels and the Yeoman Warders, whose guided tours are included in the admission price and bring the site's darker stories to life.
Allow at least two to three hours: the White Tower, the medieval palace rooms and a walk along the walls each deserve time. Head to the Jewel House early in the day, before the queues build. Tickets are cheaper and quicker when booked online in advance. There is no bag storage and large luggage is not allowed inside, so travel light. Tower Hill Underground station is a few minutes' walk away, and the site pairs naturally with a stroll across Tower Bridge.
