Attraction
British Museum
Britain's great museum of world history and culture in Bloomsbury, with free entry to a permanent collection spanning two million years of human civilisation.
Britain's national gallery of modern and contemporary art, set in a former power station on the South Bank with free collection displays.
Good to know
Tate Modern occupies the former Bankside Power Station, and the cavernous Turbine Hall at its heart hosts large-scale commissions. The collection displays, covering international art from 1900 to the present, are free, while major exhibitions are ticketed.
Allow time for the Blavatnik Building, whose upper level offers a view across the Thames to St Paul's Cathedral. Friday and Saturday evenings, when the museum stays open until 21:00, are a good time to visit. Book exhibition tickets in advance, and note that visitors aged 16 to 25 can join Tate Collective for cheaper exhibition entry. Lockers are available for bags. Southwark and Blackfriars stations are nearby, or walk across the Millennium Bridge from St Paul's.
