Attraction
Burj Khalifa
The world's tallest building, rising 828 metres over Downtown Dubai, with observation decks on levels 124, 125 and 148 open to ticketed visitors.
A museum on the site where the UAE was founded in December 1971, telling the story of the union through archives, films and personal objects.
Good to know
The Etihad Museum stands where the rulers of the emirates met to sign the agreement that created the United Arab Emirates on 2 December 1971. Designed by Moriyama & Teshima Architects, the building is shaped like an unfurled manuscript, with seven slanting columns that echo the pens used at the signing. The original Union House and its flagpole sit alongside it.
Inside, the galleries concentrate on the years from 1968 to 1974, using documents, old passports, film and the personal belongings of the founding rulers to explain how the federation came together. It is the clearest introduction to modern UAE history in the city and rarely feels crowded. Allow around two hours, and pair it with a stroll to Jumeirah Mosque, a short drive south along the coast.
