Why we recommend it

Jim Thompson revived the Thai silk industry after the Second World War, then vanished in Malaysia in 1967. His house, assembled from several traditional teak buildings beside Khlong Saen Saep, survives as a museum full of Buddhist sculpture, Chinese porcelain and paintings he collected across the region.

The main house can only be seen with a guide, and tours run in Thai, English, French, Chinese and Japanese, so you learn how the raised floors, red-painted walls and tall thresholds worked in a tropical home. The lush garden and a small gallery are worth time too. It is a short walk from BTS National Stadium, making it easy to combine with the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. Book online when slots are available, or ask the ticket office about walk-in tours.
