Thailand's principal national museum, set in the former Front Palace near Sanam Luang, with collections spanning Thai art, archaeology and royal heritage.
Occupying the former Wang Na, or Front Palace, the Bangkok National Museum is the country's main repository of Thai art and history. Galleries move from prehistoric finds through Dvaravati, Srivijaya, Sukhothai and Ayutthaya sculpture, while other halls hold royal funeral chariots, costumes, weapons and ceremonial objects.
The Buddhaisawan Chapel, with its fine murals and the revered Phra Phuttha Sihing image, is a highlight that many visitors miss. The site is large and spread across several buildings, so pick a few galleries rather than trying to see everything in one go. It lies a short walk from the Grand Palace and Sanam Luang, and is run by the Fine Arts Department, which publishes its monthly opening calendar online, so check before you go.
