Kuala Lumpur Travel Guide: Things to Do, Attractions & Where to Eat

There are plenty of things to do in Kuala Lumpur, a city where glass skyscrapers rise above colonial buildings, Chinese shophouses, Hindu temples and mosques. Most visitors start in KLCC with the Petronas Twin Towers and KL Tower, then explore the older streets around Merdeka Square, Masjid Jamek, Chinatown and Petaling Street. The green Lake Gardens area holds the National Mosque, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, the National Museum and the KL Bird Park, and Batu Caves lies a short train ride to the north.

Food is a major reason to come. Kuala Lumpur blends Malay, Chinese and Indian cooking, from hawker stalls on Jalan Alor and old Chinatown noodle shops to Michelin-starred tasting menus such as Dewakan and Beta. Bukit Bintang is the main area for shopping and nightlife, while Bangsar and Bukit Damansara have some of the best cafes and cocktail bars. Three to four days is enough for the main sights and a good sample of the food scene, with an extra day for a trip out of the city.
