1. Dewakan
Chef Darren Teoh's Dewakan, on level 48 of Naza Tower, became Malaysia's first two-Michelin-star restaurant with a tasting menu built on indigenous Malaysian produce.
View details — DewakanKuala Lumpur is one of Asia's great food cities, and its restaurants reflect a mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Nyonya traditions. At the top end, Dewakan holds two Michelin stars for its tasting menu of indigenous Malaysian produce, while Beta KL, Akar and DC. by Darren Chin each hold one star and show how local chefs are reinterpreting Malaysian and French cooking. For a refined introduction to Malay food in a relaxed setting, Bijan on Jalan Ceylon has long been a reliable choice, and Congkak in Bukit Bintang serves shared nasi ambeng platters at moderate prices.
Some of the city's most rewarding meals are found in older, simpler places. Sek Yuen in Pudu has been serving Cantonese dishes such as pipa duck since 1948, and on Jalan Sultan in Chinatown, Nam Heong and Lai Foong Lala Noodles are Bib Gourmand favourites for chicken rice and clam noodle soup. Aliyaa in Bukit Damansara is the place for Sri Lankan curries and whole crab. Book fine-dining restaurants well ahead, especially for weekends, and expect set menus and dress codes. Most casual places take walk-ins, so arrive early to avoid lunchtime queues, and remember that many Chinese restaurants serve pork while Malay restaurants are halal.
