Thing to do
Tsukiji Outer Market
The lively market streets that remained in Tsukiji after the wholesale fish market moved to Toyosu, packed with seafood stalls, knife shops and breakfast counters.
Tokyo's principal kabuki theatre in Ginza, rebuilt in 2013 to a Kengo Kuma design, staging traditional performances most days of the month.
Good to know
Kabuki-za is the main stage for kabuki, the stylised theatre of elaborate costumes, white make-up and dramatic poses that took shape in the Edo period. The current building, which reopened in 2013 behind a traditional facade with a tower block rising behind, was designed by Kengo Kuma, and a new programme is staged most months of the year.
First-timers do not need to commit to a full programme lasting several hours: single-act seats on the fourth level are sold for individual acts, and they remain on sale even when reserved seats have sold out. Rentable subtitle guides in English make the plots much easier to follow, and the programme sold on site includes a detailed English synopsis. The theatre stands in the heart of Ginza, right beside Higashi-ginza Station on the Hibiya and Asakusa lines, so it is easy to combine with an afternoon in Ginza.
