Attraction
Senso-ji
Tokyo's oldest and most visited Buddhist temple, reached through the Kaminarimon gate and the shop-lined Nakamise approach in historic Asakusa.
The red-and-white 333-metre lattice tower that opened in 1958, with a Main Deck at 150 metres and a Top Deck at around 250 metres.
Good to know
Opened in 1958, Tokyo Tower remains the city's most recognisable landmark despite being overtaken in height by Skytree. Its 333-metre orange-and-white frame stands beside Shiba Park and Zojo-ji temple, and the views from the Main Deck at 150 metres look straight across to the towers of central Tokyo and Roppongi. A separately ticketed Top Deck Tour takes you up to roughly 250 metres.
Its central location makes it easy to fit into an evening, and the Main Deck stays open until 23:00 with last entry at 22:30, so it works well after dinner when the tower is lit up. Tickets can be bought online through the official site. Akabanebashi Station on the Oedo Line is about five minutes away, and walking up from Zojo-ji gives the classic photo of the temple gate with the tower behind it.
