Why we recommend it

Shinjuku Gyoen is a former imperial garden that now offers some of the most generous green space in central Tokyo. Within its 58 hectares you move between a traditional Japanese landscape garden with ponds and teahouses, a sweeping English-style lawn and a formal French garden lined with plane trees, plus a large greenhouse of tropical plants. With roughly 1,500 cherry trees across many varieties, it is one of the city's best-known spots for spring blossom, and autumn colour is strong too.

An admission fee is charged, and the garden is closed on Mondays (or the next weekday if Monday is a holiday) and over the New Year. Opening hours change by season, so check the official admission page before going. Shinjuku-gyoemmae Station on the Marunouchi Line is closest to the Shinjuku Gate, and it is a short walk from the busy streets of Shinjuku.
