Why we recommend it

Ueno Park opened in 1873 and has become Tokyo's great cultural quarter, with more museums packed into one green space than anywhere else in the city. Within walking distance of each other you will find the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Western Art (a UNESCO-listed Le Corbusier building), the National Museum of Nature and Science and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, alongside Ueno Zoo and the gilded Ueno Toshogu shrine.

The park itself is free and always open, and in spring around 800 cherry trees make it one of the busiest hanami spots in Tokyo. Shinobazu Pond, with its lotus beds and boat hire, is pleasant in summer. Use JR Ueno Station's Park Exit for the quickest way in, and combine a visit with the Ameyoko market street just south of the park.
