Restaurant
Katz’s Delicatessen
A Lower East Side institution since 1888, famous for hand-carved pastrami on rye, corned beef and its role in When Harry Met Sally.
The original Greenwich Village slice shop founded in 1975 by Naples-born Joe Pozzuoli, serving classic thin New York-style pizza by the slice.
Good to know
Joe's Pizza opened in 1975 on the corner of Bleecker and Carmine Streets, founded by Joe Pozzuoli, who came from Naples, and the shop now trades a few doors down at 7 Carmine Street. It is a no-frills counter operation, and that is the point: thin, foldable New York-style slices served quickly to a constant stream of locals, students and visitors.
Order a plain cheese slice to judge it properly, or try the fresh mozzarella version. There is little seating, so most people eat standing or take a slice out onto the street. The brand has expanded to other branches, but this Village shop is the one with the history.
