Restaurant
St. JOHN Smithfield
Fergus Henderson's influential Smithfield restaurant, founded in 1994 and known for nose-to-tail British cooking from a daily changing menu.
The original Dishoom, a Bombay-style café in Covent Garden serving breakfast, small plates, grills and curries from morning until late.
Good to know
Dishoom's first restaurant pays homage to the old Irani cafés of Bombay, with a menu that runs from breakfast through to late-night dinners. Expect grills, biryanis, curries, small plates and breads, plus a cocktail list that includes the house Diamond Thriller.
The Covent Garden branch keeps most tables for walk-ins, so queues are common at peak times; arriving for breakfast or a mid-afternoon meal is the easiest way to avoid a long wait. After 18:00, bookings are only taken for groups of six or more, so smaller groups should be prepared to queue. Order a mix of plates to share, and look out for the location's own specials, such as the grilled prawn pathia. Leicester Square and Covent Garden stations are a few minutes away.
