Attraction
British Museum
Britain's great museum of world history and culture in Bloomsbury, with free entry to a permanent collection spanning two million years of human civilisation.
The Gothic church beside Parliament where English and British monarchs have been crowned for centuries, full of royal tombs and memorials.
Good to know
Westminster Abbey has been the setting for coronations, royal weddings and state funerals for centuries, and its interior is crowded with tombs and memorials to monarchs, poets and scientists. It remains a working church, so sightseeing fits around daily worship.
Sightseeing runs Monday to Saturday, while Sundays are reserved for services, which anyone may attend. Booking ahead is strongly advised in busy periods, and arriving close to opening gives the calmest experience in the nave and Poets' Corner. Visitors enter through the North Entrance on Parliament Square. Bags larger than cabin size are not permitted and there is no parking, so arrive by Tube: Westminster and St James's Park stations are a short walk. Wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge from an Abbey Marshal.
