Why we recommend it

Overlooking Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery holds the national collection of Western European painting, running from medieval altarpieces through the Renaissance to the Impressionists. General admission is free, so it works equally well for a focused hour or a full afternoon.

Pick up the free audio guide, which covers more than 50 key paintings, and plan a route rather than wandering every room. Friday evenings, when the gallery stays open until 21:00, tend to be quieter than weekend afternoons. Walk-up entry is possible, but a free online booking gives fast-track access at busy times. The cloakroom charges per item and wheeled luggage is not accepted. Charing Cross and Leicester Square stations are both close, and the Sainsbury Wing is the main entrance.
