1. Central
Virgilio Martínez and Pía León's tasting-menu restaurant in Barranco, named the world's best restaurant in 2023, built around ingredients from Peru's coast, Andes and Amazon.
View details — CentralLima's restaurants are the main reason many travellers visit. At the top end, Central in Barranco and Maido in Miraflores have both been named the best restaurant in the world, and Kjolle, Mayta and Astrid y Gastón offer equally memorable meals. These places need booking well ahead, sometimes months in advance, and several close on Sundays or Mondays, so plan your nights around them.
At lunchtime, follow the local habit of eating seafood: El Mercado serves ceviches in a courtyard dining room and opens only for lunch, while La Rosa Náutica offers fish on a pier over the Pacific. For classic home cooking, Isolina in Barranco serves generous sharing plates in the style of the old Lima taverns. Do not leave without trying chifa, the Chinese-Peruvian cooking represented here by the long-established Chifa Titi, or a pan con chicharrón at El Chinito, a sandwich shop founded in 1960. Mixing one tasting menu with simpler meals is the best way to understand the city's food.
