Good to know
The Lumiares is a five-star boutique hotel and spa in the middle of Bairro Alto, on Rua do Diário de Notícias, a street named after the newspaper that once had its offices in the district. It occupies a restored building in the grid of narrow lanes above the Chiado and offers a more residential style of stay than a traditional hotel, with studios and suites rather than standard rooms.
The accommodation is arranged in six types: studios, one-bedroom suites, Bairro Alto mezzanine suites, two-bedroom suites, the Glória suite and a penthouse. The larger units suit families or friends travelling together, as they offer separate living space, and the studios work well for couples. Having a separate living area is a real advantage on longer stays, and it is unusual to find so close to the Chiado.
At the top of the building, the Lumi rooftop bar and restaurant has panoramic views over the rooftops to the castle and the river, and it is open to non-residents, so it is worth booking at sunset. The hotel also has a spa and a gym. Through its parent company, guests can arrange the hire of a Moke, a small open-topped car, for trips out of the city.
The Lumiares suits travellers who want to be close to Lisbon's nightlife and restaurants while having more space than a standard hotel room. Bairro Alto is the city's main bar district, so expect noise in the streets late at night, especially at weekends. During the day the neighbourhood is quiet, and it is a good base for walking to the Chiado, Príncipe Real and the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, all within a few minutes.
The Baixa-Chiado metro station is about ten minutes' walk downhill, and Restauradores station is reachable by walking down the hill towards Avenida da Liberdade. Tram 28 stops at Largo de Camões, a few minutes away. Arriving by car is difficult, as Bairro Alto's streets are narrow and access is restricted, so a taxi or ride-hailing car to the nearest point is the easiest option with luggage. Reservations can be made directly through the hotel by email or phone.
