Café
Conditori La Glace
Copenhagen's classic patisserie, founded in 1870 just off Strøget, serving traditional Danish layer cakes such as the Sportskage in an old-fashioned tea room.
Richard Hart's artisan bakery on Gammel Kongevej in Frederiksberg, the first of his Copenhagen shops, known for sourdough bread, croissants and cardamom rolls.
Good to know
Hart Bageri was founded by Richard Hart, a baker trained in the science of baking who was the baker at Noma before he opened his own business. The first Hart bakery opened on Gammel Kongevej in Frederiksberg, and the company has since grown to around ten bakeries in Copenhagen, from Vesterbro, Nørrebro and Østerbro to Islands Brygge, Carlsberg Byen, Holmen, Reffen and the city centre. The Frederiksberg shop remains the original.
The signature product is sourdough bread, which often sells out quickly, so come early if you want a loaf. Alongside the bread, the bakery makes butter-baked croissants, cardamom rolls, other pastries and seasonal specialities, all from scratch. Visit Copenhagen describes Hart as having pushed the boundaries of what Danish pastries look like, and the bakery has become well known both in Denmark and abroad.
Hart works best as a takeaway stop. Pick up a cardamom roll and a coffee for breakfast, or a loaf and some pastries for a picnic in one of the parks. It suits food lovers, early risers and families who want a quality breakfast on the go. Popular items can run out by late morning, especially at weekends, so the earlier you arrive the more choice you will have. The bakery also offers ordering ahead online, with pickup at the shop, which is the safest way to secure bread for a particular day.
Opening hours vary between the different Hart bakeries, so check the bakery's website for the times at the shop you plan to visit. Most bakeries in Copenhagen open early in the morning, which makes Hart a good first stop before a day of sightseeing.
Gammel Kongevej is one of Frederiksberg's main shopping streets, running west from the Lakes towards Frederiksberg. It is lined with shops, cafés and restaurants, and the side street Værnedamsvej and, further west, Frederiksberg Gardens are within reach on foot or by bike. If you are staying in another part of the city, one of the other Hart branches will be closer, but the original shop is worth the trip for keen bakery fans.
Hart also has a bakery at Reffen, which is handy if you are heading out to the street food market in season.
