Good to know
Steel House Copenhagen is a large hostel in Vesterbro, set in the former headquarters of the Metalworkers' Union, a building that has been turned into what Visit Copenhagen describes as a luxury hostel with an industrial chic, New York-inspired design. It is one of the biggest places to stay in the city, with 253 rooms, and it welcomes both backpackers and families. The hostel holds Green Key certification.
Room types cover the full budget range. Dormitories have four or six beds, and there are double rooms, single rooms and twin rooms for one or two guests, some of which have their own terrace. Private rooms offer a good-value alternative to a hotel for couples and small families.
The facilities are what set Steel House apart from most hostels. There is a bar, a gym and an indoor pool, which is rare for a budget property in central Copenhagen. Both the pool and the gym carry a small extra charge, either per visit or for the whole stay, so check the current prices at reception. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building.
The hostel suits backpackers, students, friends travelling together and families on a budget who still want a stylish base. With so many rooms it has a busy, social feel, especially in summer. As with any large hostel, bring a padlock if you are sleeping in a dorm, book early for summer weekends, and ask for a quieter room if you plan to rest early.
Herholdtsgade is a short side street in Vesterbro, close to Copenhagen Central Station, so arriving by train from the airport is simple. Tivoli Gardens, City Hall Square and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek are within a short walk, and the bars and restaurants of Vesterbro, Istedgade and the Meatpacking District are close by for the evening. Mikkeller Bar on Viktoriagade and Lidkoeb on Vesterbrogade are both within easy walking distance.
To book, contact the hostel by email at its reservations address or call +45 33 17 71 10, or reserve through its website. Prices vary considerably by season and day of the week, so flexible travellers can often find better rates midweek.
