Good to know
The Country Club Lima Hotel is the grande dame of Lima's hotels, a place with almost a century of history. Construction began in August 1925 and it was inaugurated on 8 February 1927, designed in a Californian colonial style by the American architect T.J. O'Brien with materials imported from the United States and Britain. It opened as an exclusive country club and was later turned into a hotel, and until the 1970s it was the meeting point for Lima's elite and the city's British community. The hotel describes itself as one of the only hotels in Peru recognised as a national monument.
After difficult years during the economic crisis of the 1980s, the building was bought in 1996 and reopened on 21 July 1998 after renovation, and it was renovated again between 2015 and 2017. Today it operates as a five-star hotel with 83 rooms and suites. One of its distinctive features is the collection of around 300 original works of art displayed throughout the building, on loan from the Museo Pedro de Osma in Barranco, a link between two of Lima's historic institutions.
The hotel's guest list over the decades includes the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson, Charles de Gaulle, Richard Nixon, Ernest Hemingway, Ava Gardner, John Wayne and Mick Jagger. Its two best-known venues are the Perroquet restaurant, which has won best hotel restaurant awards in international competitions, and the English Bar, famous for its pisco sours and named Lima's best bar at the Summum awards in 2012, 2013 and 2022.
Guests receive privileges at the Lima Golf Club, which makes the hotel a natural choice for golfers. The location in San Isidro, which the hotel calls Lima's prestigious district, suits business travellers and anyone who prefers a quieter, more traditional base than the clifftop hotels of Miraflores. Astrid y Gastón's Casa Moreyra and Chifa Titi are both in San Isidro.
The hotel suits couples, history lovers and travellers who appreciate historic architecture. Even if you are not staying, a pisco sour at the English Bar is worth the trip. Reservations are handled through the hotel's call centre and website.
