Good to know
Haku Tours is a family-owned tour company based in Miraflores, set up in 2011 and run, in its own words, by Inka descendants. It holds a licence from Peru's tourism ministry and the Marca Perú certification, and it describes itself as the first social and sustainable tour agency in Lima. Its sister non-profit, Reciprocity, channels proceeds to families living in extreme poverty in the city's shanty towns, so booking a tour here also supports local communities. Multi-day packages include a guide, transfers and hotels.
The programme covers most of what first-time visitors want from Lima. The Lima City Tour lasts about three and a half hours, with morning and afternoon departures and hotel pick-up and drop-off. The Highlights tour spends around four hours in Barranco, Miraflores, Chorrillos and Surquillo, and the All Inclusive Lima Highlights tour fills a full day of about eight and a half hours. For food lovers, a three-and-a-half-hour Peruvian cooking class starts with a visit to a local market and ends with you preparing and eating your own ceviche.
Haku also runs some less common experiences. The Shanty Town Tour, a three-and-a-half-hour introduction to local life on the city's edge, is linked directly to the company's social work. The evening tour to the Circuito Mágico del Agua takes in the fountains and laser show at the Parque de la Reserva, and a three-hour bike tour rides through Miraflores and Barranco. For a big day out, a private 16-hour trip leaves at 04:30 for the Ballestas Islands and the desert oasis of Huacachina.
Most tours include hotel pick-up and flexible cancellation, which makes planning easier. The company also arranges airport transfers with a driver waiting with your name on arrival, and shore excursions for cruise passengers with a guaranteed return to the ship. The office on Avenida José Larco in Miraflores is open every day from 08:30 to 18:30.
Haku suits first-time visitors, families, solo travellers and anyone who wants their spending to benefit local people. Book online or contact the office by phone or email; the client line and the booking address are published on the website.
