1. St. Lawrence Market
Toronto's historic food market on Front Street East, with food stalls in the South Market, part of the 1845 city hall, and a Saturday farmers' market.
View details — St. Lawrence MarketMany of the best experiences in Toronto are free or cost little more than what you eat. St. Lawrence Market on Front Street East has traded on its site since the early nineteenth century; come on a Saturday, when the farmers' market fills the new North Market from 5am, and note that the South Market closes on Mondays. Kensington Market, a National Historic Site west of Spadina Avenue, is best explored on foot, with independent food shops and vintage clothing on its narrow streets.
The Distillery Historic District turns the former Gooderham and Worts distillery into a car-free village of shops, galleries and theatre, and from mid-November it hosts the Distillery Winter Village, free on Monday to Wednesday until mid-December. On the waterfront, Harbourfront Centre runs thousands of events a year, many free, from summer festivals to craft studios and contemporary art. For a change of scene, take the free shuttle bus from Broadview station to Evergreen Brick Works in the Don Valley, where the Saturday farmers' market runs from 8am to 1pm beside the old kilns and quarry garden.
