Restaurant
1. Delta
Two-Michelin-star restaurant on the fifth floor of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, serving a single creative tasting menu built on its own garden produce.
View details — DeltaEating out in Athens ranges from souvlaki shops and basement tavernas to some of the most ambitious kitchens in the Mediterranean. For a taste of the old city, queue for pork skewers at Kostas on Agias Irinis Square, eat kebab on Monastiraki Square at O Thanasis, which has served it since 1964, or find the unsigned stairs down to Diporto near the central market, where pulses, fried sardines and barrel wine are served at shared tables. Karamanlidika tou Fani, a few streets away, is a deli and meze restaurant built around the cured meats of Cappadocia.
A newer generation of restaurants has put Athens firmly on the food map. Nolan near Syntagma, Akra in Pangrati and Pharaoh near Exarchia all hold Michelin Bib Gourmands for creative, good-value cooking, from Greek-international small plates to wood-fired dishes and natural wine. For special occasions, Spondi in Pangrati serves contemporary French cooking with a Michelin star, Delta at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center holds two stars, and Varoulko Seaside cooks the day's catch on the harbour of Mikrolimano in Piraeus. Booking is wise for the more popular tables, especially at weekends.
