Evenings in Athens start late and run long, and the city has some of the best cocktail bars in Europe. The streets between Syntagma and Monastiraki hold two names from the World's 50 Best Bars lists: The Clumsies, the all-day bar of bartenders Nikos Bakoulis and Vasilis Kyritsis on Praxitelous Street, and Baba au Rum on Klitiou Street, with its huge rum collection and tropical cocktails, open nightly until 03:00. They are a few minutes apart on foot, so it is easy to visit both.

For a view, the rooftop of A for Athens looks across Monastiraki Square to the floodlit Acropolis; book a table for sunset. In Plaka, Brettos has poured its own ouzo, brandy and fruit liqueurs since 1909 under a wall of backlit bottles, and it has a good alcohol-free menu too. South of the Acropolis, Koukaki's Tiki Bar Athens has served tiki cocktails opposite the Acropolis Museum since 2007, and in neighbouring Petralona, Upupa Epops is a café by day and a courtyard cocktail bar by night. Bars get busiest after midnight, especially at weekends.
