1. Acropolis of Athens
The rocky citadel above Athens crowned by the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Propylaea and Temple of Athena Nike, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
View details — Acropolis of AthensAthens has more major ancient monuments within walking distance of each other than almost any other capital. The Acropolis, with the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the Propylaea, dominates the centre, and most visitors pair it with the Acropolis Museum at the foot of the rock, where the original sculptures are displayed in light-filled galleries. Below the hill, the Ancient Agora, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the marble Panathenaic Stadium show different sides of the ancient and modern city, while the National Archaeological Museum holds the finest collection of Greek antiquities anywhere, from the gold of Mycenae to the Antikythera mechanism.
Plan the Acropolis first, because entry uses timed tickets with a daily cap: book a slot online and go at opening time or in the late afternoon to avoid the busiest hours and the worst of the summer heat. The combined ticket for the main archaeological sites covers the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and several smaller sites over five days. Kolonaki's museums, the Benaki Museum and the Museum of Cycladic Art, sit a few minutes apart and make a good indoor morning, and the National Garden is the place to cool off between sights. End a day on Mount Lycabettus for the view across the whole city at sunset.
