View details — Berlin TV TowerSome of the best experiences in Berlin come from doing what Berliners do rather than ticking off monuments. Spend an afternoon on Tempelhofer Feld, the former airport where you can cycle or skate along the old runways, or go to Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg on a Thursday evening for its street food market. For views, the observation deck of the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz shows the whole city laid out below, and is especially popular at sunset. The Hackesche Höfe, a chain of courtyards with Art Nouveau tiles, shops, a cinema and a variety theatre, make an easy stop between Museum Island and Prenzlauer Berg.
Culture is a real strength. A concert by the Berliner Philharmoniker at the Philharmonie is a highlight for music lovers, and the free lunchtime concerts in its foyer are a good low-cost alternative. Book TV Tower tickets and concerts in advance, especially at weekends. Tempelhofer Feld is open from sunrise to sunset and has very little shade, so bring water in summer. Markthalle Neun is closed on Sundays, while the Hackesche Höfe are open daily until late evening. Many of these places combine well with nearby neighbourhoods, so allow time to wander the streets around them.
