View details — BerghainBerlin's nightlife is famous worldwide, and it covers far more than techno. At one end are clubs such as Berghain, in a former power station near Ostbahnhof, known for long weekend parties and a strict door. At the other are relaxed places for a drink: Prater Garten in Prenzlauer Berg, a beer garden with a long history under the chestnut trees, and Klunkerkranich, a garden bar on the roof of a car park in Neukölln with views across the city. For cocktails with a view, the Monkey Bar on the top of the Bikini Berlin building looks over the Zoo and the Tiergarten.
Music and dancing have deep roots here too. Clärchens Ballhaus in Mitte is a historic dance hall with a restaurant, and Quasimodo, in a basement on Kantstrasse in Charlottenburg, has hosted jazz, blues, soul and funk concerts since 1975. Berlin goes out late: bars fill up after 9pm, and clubs often get going after midnight and run into the next day. There is no closing time for bars, so pace yourself. Many venues prefer cash, photography is restricted in some clubs, and beer gardens and rooftop bars are seasonal, so check opening days before you go. Public transport runs through the night at weekends.
