View details — Curry 36Eating out in Berlin is good value and very varied. The city's own classic is currywurst, and two stands show its range: Curry 36 on Mehringdamm, open until the early hours, and Konnopke's Imbiss under the elevated railway in Prenzlauer Berg, run by the same family since 1930. For traditional German cooking in an old setting, Zur letzten Instanz traces its history to 1621, and Max und Moritz in Kreuzberg has served hearty dishes since 1902. Berlin's immigrant communities add much more: Monsieur Vuong in Mitte is a long-standing favourite for Vietnamese food, and Defne by the Landwehr Canal serves Turkish-Mediterranean meze and grills.
At the top end, the city has a strong fine-dining scene. Rutz holds three Michelin stars, Tim Raue two, and Nobelhart and Schmutzig cooks only with regional produce at a counter around its open kitchen, while Borchardt near the Gendarmenmarkt offers classic brasserie dishes in a grand room. Book fine-dining restaurants well ahead, as many open only on certain evenings and close on Sundays and Mondays. Casual places rarely take bookings. Berliners tend to eat dinner from around 7pm, and tipping of around 5 to 10 percent is usual when service is good.
