Café
1. The Barn
The Mitte café of one of Berlin's best-known speciality coffee roasters, on Auguststrasse in the gallery district, serving its own light-roasted coffee daily.
View details — The BarnBerlin has one of the strongest café cultures in Europe, and speciality coffee has been part of it since the mid-2000s. Roasters such as The Barn, with a café on Auguststrasse in the gallery district, Bonanza Coffee on Oderberger Strasse in Prenzlauer Berg, and Five Elephant in Kreuzberg, famous for its cheesecake, are good places to try lighter, single-origin roasts. Father Carpenter on Münzstrasse adds a full brunch kitchen to its own coffee, which makes it one of the best choices in Mitte for a proper breakfast.
Traditional cafés are just as rewarding. Konditorei Buchwald near the Tiergarten has been making cakes for around 170 years and is known for Baumkuchen, the layered tree cake, while the organic bakery Zeit für Brot draws queues for its cinnamon rolls. Most speciality cafés open from around 8am or 9am and close by early evening, and many are busiest on weekend mornings, so go early or on a weekday if you want a seat. Cards are widely accepted, though a little cash is useful at small places. Combining a café stop with a walk through the surrounding neighbourhood is one of the most pleasant ways to spend a morning.
